Five Tips for an Autumn Clear Out

Spring isn’t the only time to give your home an overhaul, especially if you’re thinking about putting it on the market with Keywest or have done so already. An Autumn Clear Out can be ideal to declutter, especially if you’re likely to experience a new influx of goods over the Christmas season.

The following five steps will help you to enjoy more organisation in your home while ensuring that it is appealing as possible to prospective buyers.

Be Prepared

Set out to be organised in your decluttering efforts by creating a list of the areas of your home you want to tackle. Even if you haven’t got time to do the whole house, make sure you tackle the danger zones in your home, which are the areas where clutter is most likely to accumulate

These zones typically include your kitchen cupboards or pantry, wardrobes, storage areas, garages or sheds and anywhere that has become a dumping ground for surplus items.

Start with a Clean Slate

Give yourself plenty of room to sort through items, whether that’s papers and bills or kitchenware. Look at each area in turn and try to imagine how you want it to look when you have finished your clear-out.

What Makes the Cut?

Be ruthless about what you really want and need to keep and what you don’t. This can be a bit of an emotional task as you sift through things you have accumulated across the years, but it can be cathartic as well.

It can be a good idea to get a friend or member of your family to help, especially if you are the sort of person who is likely to be more influenced by sentimentality than practicality.

Another Person’s Treasure

Once you have a pile of things you don’t want to keep, separate items into those you want to sell, donate or throw away. Sell things at car boot sales or make use of online auction sites, and donate items to people you know or a charity shop.

Rebuild Your Zones

Next comes the fun part, when you get to rebuild the area you have cleared. Try to ensure that every item you return has a place where it can either be fully used or appreciated.

At this stage, you might even decide to get rid of additional items. Remember that if you can’t decide whether to keep a possession, you probably don’t need it or like it enough for it to deserve a space in your home.
