If you are considering a move within Leicester or are planning to buy or rent a property in Leicestershire for the first time, your choice of location may be influenced by the need to secure the best possible education for your children. That is why news that building work has begun on creating hundreds of new school places may be just the spur to allow you to broaden the scope of your search or even bring forward a planned move.

Building work has just started at Desford Community Primary School as part of a £6.5 million programme of works that will see 600 new places being created at 13 different primary schools in Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council, working through the East Midlands Property Alliance (EMPA), is behind the project, which will see Desford Primary benefiting from new classrooms, halls and kitchens. The EMPA alliance was formed by East Midlands’ councils to improve the procurement and the delivery of this type of project and other property maintenance functions to save money and time for public-sector organisations – and local taxpayers. EMPA’s head of service, Alan Coole, said the project would be vital in meeting the needs of Leicestershire communities by creating accommodation for pupils in the area and improving school environments overall.

Last summer saw the announcement that 2,660 extra primary school places were set to be created by Leicester City Council. The £15 million scheme was aimed at seeing extra classrooms being created at 17 different primary schools. One of the schools which formed a major part of the overall scheme was named as Alderman Richard Hallam, situated in Beaumont Leys, which will have a new reception classroom and eight further classrooms thanks to a £1.3 million investment. This was intended to allow the school to boost its three-form entry by one more, creating more than 200 places for new pupils.

Rushey Mead Primary School was another school chosen for expansion with the allocation of £374,000 worth of investment to boost student numbers by 30 in each year group, eventually adding an extra 210 new pupil places. The cash for the projects was taken from the local authority’s Basic Need pot in order to ensure that there are adequate facilities for the younger members of the Leicestershire population. Other schools named in the programme included Braunstone Frith Primary, Herrick Primary in Rushey Mead, Eyres Monsell Primary, Mowmacre Hill Primary in Tedworth Green, Parks Primary and Stokes Wood Primaries in New Parks, and Caldecote Primary in Braunstone.
