Buy Leicester Property

With the recent regeneration, the city centre in now the ideal location to buy Leicester property.

People who live in Leicester already think it is a great city, but as a multi-million-pound revamp of its centre continues apace, it is fast becoming even better.

The city’s mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, has just announced that the area surrounding the Town Hall Square will be the next focus of the continuing regeneration. The square itself, which is located outside of the local authority’s civic headquarters, is already undergoing a £100,000 revamp. Trees are being replaced, benches are being renewed and unnecessary street clutter such as advertising signs and electricity boxes will be moved to more discreet locations.

Sir Peter says that as long as he is re-elected in May, the completion of the square project will be far from the end of the refurbishment of the area. Instead, the mayor’s Connecting Leicester initiative will begin to focus on the wider area. Speaking to city councillors, Sir Peter said that because the Town Hall Square is the city’s most used public space, it required a makeover around every ten years. But the next phase would shift to the links between Berridge Street and Welford Place, along the market’s edge, via Granby Street and on to Charles Street. The mayor said the streets were central to the city’s modern retail area and required a similar amount of attention already given to areas such as Leicester’s Jubilee Square and Cathedral Gardens. A budget or a time-scale have yet to be agreed for the work.

Stuart Bailey, Leicester Civic Society’s chairman, praised the mayor’s work on improving the city centre, which has bought about improvements in what he called a ‘relatively short’ period. Previous projects as part of the Connecting Leicester scheme have included a £4 million revamp of Jubilee Square, the Belgrave Flyover demolition and a major refurbishment of streets within the Old Town. The former indoor market is also being demolished as part of the project, which broadly aims to improve links for pedestrians between Leicester’s heritage sites and historic buildings and the modern centre of the city.
