Whether it is people looking for great-value family homes or businesses seeking top-quality accommodation at a fraction of the price of other British cities, Leicester Property continues to attract people desperate to buy or rent in the area.

One of the latest Leicester ‘converts’ is a music business which is set to create 200 jobs in the local area after choosing to travel from London to set up in our East Midland’s hub. The company focuses on licensing premises to enable them to play music and support the booming number of festivals in the UK.

The business has signed a lease for two floors at Mercury Place and plans to move in next July. The move will mean that 72 staff working on the local Leicester Mercury newspaper will have to relocate.

The new company is a partnership between Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL), which has its base in Soho in the capital, and St Pancras’-based PRS for Music. Both companies are building the new firm from scratch in a bid to maximise revenues from music licensing’s changing nature.

Sir Peter Soulsby, the mayor of Leicester, has welcomed the companies’ decision to choose the city as the base for the new venture, adding that he was aware that they had looked at other locations, such as Nottingham, before being won over by the appeal of our city. The new jobs set to be created include support staff, call handlers and field staff to visit venues and festivals.

Sir Peter called the jobs boost that will be offered by the new company ‘significant’ but said that the businesses involved would be rewarded with a home in the centre of a ‘growing’ and ‘vibrant’ creative sector.

The mayor also added that the companies were amongst ‘a number’ choosing to relocate in areas near to the city’s railway station. Other successful firms to commit to the area include Hastings Direct and IBM.

Sir Peter said the music companies involved in the latest plans were attracted to Leicester thanks to its rail links and the quality of graduate talent available in the area.

Hastings Direct, meanwhile, opened its new Blue Tower call centre last year and currently employs over 700 people, with plans for a further 500 employees in the future. IBM has just moved to permanent New Walk offices from a temporary home close to the station and currently employs 145 staff, with plans to have a 300-strong Leicester workforce by the close of 2017.

Mattioli Woods is also planning to take up office space in New Walk, a former city-council-owned site. The new offices will have room for 665 workers. The wealth management company currently has 320 staff housed at Enderby’s Grove Park.
